COINTELPRO — When The FBI Declared War On Black Dissent

Power doesn’t always fear chaos; sometimes it fears unity even more. We dive into the story of COINTELPRO, the FBI’s covert program that set out to disrupt, discredit, and dismantle Black movements that threatened the status quo. From the explicit mandate to prevent “the rise of a Black messiah” to the playbook of infiltration, forged letters, internal feuds, and manufactured raids, we trace how state power turned suspicion into a weapon—and why the fallout still shapes organizing today.

We lay out what the files and hearings revealed after the 1971 document leak, then explore how those tactics landed on real people and real communities. Martin Luther King Jr. is a central case: relentless wiretaps, bugged rooms, and an anonymous letter urging suicide crossed every moral line to collapse a private life into a political bludgeon. We ask hard questions about privacy, accountability, and legacy: What should count when we measure a leader’s impact? Where does ethical scrutiny end and voyeurism begin? And how do we keep focus on material gains—voting rights, safety, dignity—when scandal is engineered to drown out substance?

From the Black Panther Party’s infiltrated chapters to raids justified by dubious intelligence, we connect historical tactics to modern dynamics: algorithmic rumor mills, strategic leaks, and the slow drip of disinformation designed to hollow out trust. Our takeaways are practical and hopeful. Movements endure when they invest in transparent norms, shared verification, and a culture that repairs relationships instead of letting suspicion rule. Privacy deserves respect; harm deserves accountability; and unity deserves protection.

There is nothing worth your life.

00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:15.200
Alright, back with another good fact for you.

00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:21.920
You heard me talk about this a little bit, but we're gonna go a little bit deeper into it now.

00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:29.280
This is COINTELPRO, when the FBI declared war on black dissent.

00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:33.599
The United States has always claimed to fear extremism.

00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:39.439
What it has actually feared consistently is organized black resistance.

00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:47.840
In 1956, the FBI quietly launched a program called COINTELPRO, a counterintelligence program.

00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:52.079
Its stated purpose was to protect national security.

00:01:52.319 --> 00:02:00.079
Its actual mission was to disrupt, discredit, and destroy political movements the government found threatening.

00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:03.040
Black activists were not collateral damage.

00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:05.120
They were the primary targets.

00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:05.920
Under J.

00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:16.080
Edgar Hoover, the FBI decided that black leadership, especially leadership capable of uniting people, was a greater threat than organized crime.

00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:25.039
Hoover openly stated that the goal was to prevent the rise of a black messiah who could galvanize the masses.

00:02:25.360 --> 00:02:30.319
That language was not metaphorical, it was directive.

00:02:30.719 --> 00:02:34.960
COINTELPRO tactics were ruthless and calculated.

00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:45.520
Agents infiltrated organizations, spread false rumors, forged letters, manipulated relationships, and intentionally created internal conflict.

00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:51.120
They weaponized ego, fear, jealousy, and distrust.

00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:55.680
They didn't just monitor activists, they destabilized their lives.

00:02:55.919 --> 00:02:57.360
Martin King Jr.

00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:06.080
was surveilled relentlessly, his hotel rooms were bugged, his phone calls recorded, his private life dissected.

00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:13.439
The FBI sent him an anonymous letter encouraging him to commit suicide, implying exposure was imminent.

00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:17.919
This was not fringe behavior, this was federal policy.

00:03:18.639 --> 00:03:22.319
Black Panther chapters were infiltrated at nearly every level.

00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:35.439
Informants were paid to sow paranoia, meetings were sabotaged, leaders were arrested on trumped-up charges, others were killed during police raids justified by fabricated intelligence.

00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:40.879
COINTELPRO did not rely on legality, it relied on secrecy.

00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:50.000
When the program was exposed in 1971, after activists broke into an FBI office and leaked documents, the public was stunned.

00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:52.240
Congressional hearings followed.

00:03:52.479 --> 00:03:56.400
Officials expressed regret, and reforms were promised.

00:03:56.639 --> 00:04:00.240
And yet, no one went to prison.

00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:03.039
The damage had already been done.

00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:05.199
Organizations were fractured.

00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:06.879
Trust was poisoned.

00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:14.240
Movements that could have reshaped economic and racial policy were neutralized before they reached full power.

00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:19.279
COINTELPRO didn't just target radicals, it criminalized dissent.

00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:28.879
It taught future administrations that surveillance, misinformation, and disruption were effective tools against movements demanding accountability.

00:04:29.199 --> 00:04:31.439
The consequences are still with us.

00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:40.480
When activists today speak of being watched, infiltrated, discredited, or undermined from within, they're not being dramatic.

00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:47.360
They're remembering COINTELPRO wasn't an operation, it was a rehearsal.

00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:54.560
So I know I keep going back and saying this current administration, but we can find ourselves here again because, well, that's what they're trying to do, right?

00:04:54.639 --> 00:04:58.240
With the way that the FBI and other agencies are running.

00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:12.480
But when you go back and look over Martin Luther King Jr., I don't know if you guys know this, but for many years there's been kind of a split between black people with him because of the things that the FBI found and released.

00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:19.199
When they wrote him and told him to commit suicide because exposure was imminent, well, that's what happened.

00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:22.639
So we found out that Martin of the King smoked cigarettes every once in a while.

00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:26.639
I think it was found out that he was having or going to have an affair.

00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:34.319
There's a lot of things that he has said in private regarding his marriage and personal life that we should never know.

00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.800
Now I'm trying to do it.

00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:40.319
Legendary.

00:06:01.439 --> 00:06:06.079
These were things that was happening in Marlowe the King Jr.'s private and secret life.

00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:10.959
Things that we didn't have any business being into.

00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:14.240
Did it affect what he did for civil rights?

00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:14.720
No.

00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:17.920
Did it affect him fighting the good fight for black people?

00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:18.480
No.

00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:24.800
Did it affect him fighting the good fight for all Americans so that we could be seen as equals?

00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:25.519
No.

00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:28.959
So it's kind of like what I've said over the years when it came to Prince.

00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:35.279
You know, people say, oh, he's out here wearing these pants with no butts in him and he's doing this and the thing.

00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:38.560
I don't got time to care what Prince is doing in his private life.

00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:45.519
Now, as long as he ain't out here trafficking women and abusing children and all of that, all I care about is the music.

00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:53.439
If he's secretly up in Paisley Park and he wants to go on stage and wear pants with no butt in them, that ain't my decision.

00:06:53.839 --> 00:06:55.040
And it's the same here.

00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:00.800
COINTELPRO was sent to destroy, and in a lot of ways, they did.

00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:05.199
But in a lot of ways, we were able to get some of that back.

00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:23.759
And I do believe that to this day, even though they may be a little bit more careful when it comes to storm black organizations, the FBI still is digging into them and releasing things that we probably should never know.

00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.399
